Florida tort reforms hurt consumers, helped insurers.

Florida’s insurance reforms hurt homeowners Louisiana faces similar rising rates and denied claims.

The Washington Post reports that Florida's tort reforms hurt homeowners and helped big insurance companies.

  • Floridians continue to pay some of the highest premiums in the country.
  • Florida has more lawsuits because the changes allowed insurers to deny claims at an alarming rate, with insurers closing 47% of claims without payment.
  • Sadly, rates are continuing to climb, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
"Georgia, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Louisiana have passed similar bills," according to the Post.

Louisiana desperately needs real insurance reforms that protect consumers and not big insurers.

Unfortunately, Florida's tort reform scam has spilled over into Louisiana. Commissioner Tim Temple and his allies in the legislature have repeatedly cited Florida's laws as the model they are following. And the results have been just as devastating:

  • Louisianans pay the second-highest annual homeowners insurance premiums.
  • Insurers are closing 44.6% of claims without payment in Louisiana.
  • Rates have increased 36.6% over the last three years in Louisiana.

The people of Louisiana cannot afford any more of Commissioner Tim Temple's empty promises that line the pockets of insurance companies. We need real insurance reforms that protect storm victims, lower rates, and hold insurance companies accountable.
